“For historical purposes it was well-worth doing,” said Jerry Turbyfill, vice president of East Tennessee and Western NC Railroad Society. “This rail is old rail that was laid in 1910 for Tweetsie. One section, one bar, will weigh right at 800 pounds.”
Turbyfill explained that the rail placed at the historic Linville Depot is the same rail that was laid to bring Tweetsie to the Newland depot in 1912. Turbyfill was quick to point out that relocating old track is not something to take lightly. In addition to being dangerously heavy, the sections of rail are protected by law.
“It’s a federal offense to use this or take it up, anywhere. You have to get permission from the right people,” said Turbyfill. “In order to get railroad ties, you have to go before the ones that manage the railroads.”
